My art practice

How long does it take to complete a painting?

It can take a week or more to complete a painting, especially a larger work.

What style do you call this?

Geometric abstraction.

What is the main inspiration for your work?

I gain a lot of inspiration from the natural world, particularly birds and flowers. Check out my About page to hear more of my story!

Are your paintings digital or hand-painted? How are they made?

All my paintings I offer now are one-off, original paintings - they are not digitally made. I use acrylic paint to create them. I use a layering technique whereby I paint a layer of shapes, wait for them to dry (which can take over an hour) and then once dry I paint another layer of shapes and so on.
I used to create digitally designed giclee prints which I designed and printed under my former business - Drunk on Water. I mainly designed abstract works and native Australian designs.

Style tips

What decorations/furnishings will suit my painting?

I may be biased but I believe that a painting is a forever piece and you should simply choose a painting you love and let the rest of the room evolve around it! However you can see some colour schemes that work well with my paintings in the styled shots on my Paintings page. There is no right or wrong though, and they work well on dark or light coloured walls.

What is the best size painting for my lounge room/bedroom/meals area?

Depending on the space, some people like a small amount of space around the painting and others a lot. If you have a larger piece, I'd recommend a fair amount of breathing space. If you're unsure though, you can use my free style service

What is the best height to hang my painting?

A general rule of thumb is to position the middle of the painting at the average eye height of an adult, which is around 150cm from the floor. However it could be a little higher if it's over a couch or a bed, or a little lower if it's in a room where you spend most of your time sitting, such as a lounge.

My painting is unframed - do I need to frame it?

This is entirely your choice! All my unframed paintings are painted around the edges of the canvas and many people display them unframed for a contemporary look. Others choose to frame the painting, in which case I recommend a wooden box frame that is flush with the surface of the painting, ie, the painting is not recessed. However this is a personal decision and there are no wrong answers.

All of my paintings come with wire on the back and are ready to hang.
